In 1751 the British, who had been arriving in the area of the Susquehanna River in 1750, started a second settlement in this area. This was the first of two locations in Ohio each named after a different Native American tribe. The name “Conestoga” was probably the French for “place of the bones,” because the French Cemetery at Fort Conestoga is among the cemeteries used for internment of soldiers killed during the French and Indian War.
In 1776, the area was selected as the site of the new capital. 1839-1842: The Charter of West Chester, although fully functional, is not yet titled as a borough as it is still a village.
1852-1855: The 1850 Pennsylvania Act revised the borough’s status, making it classified as a borough.
1860-1865: A Railway Act authorized the separation of the city from the borough byCentre Hospital, which later became known as First National Square.
